SAN Francisco 49ers star Brock Purdy is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL – and one of the lowest paid.
The Super Bowl star earns $875,000 per year, compared to Kansas City Chiefs counterpart Patrick Mahomes, who is making a whopping $44.5 million this season.
It is for this reason that the second-year pro – who was the final pick of the 2022 Draft – has an extremely frugal lifestyle for an NFL star.
Living in the expensive Bay Area, Purdy splits rent with one of his teammates, 49ers offensive lineman Nick Zakelj.
And he drives a Toyota Sequoia SUV, rather than a flash supercar.
“Obviously, he plays offensive line so everywhere we go, I’m always trying to treat him and make sure I’m paying for his food,” Purdy said of his roommate.
“We click really well and he’s been great to have. [We] go home, we talk about football, talk about life, so we get along great.
“He’s going to be at my wedding as well, so he’s awesome.”
Zakelj, who earns more than Purdy with a salary of $985,000, clearly enjoys the experience too.
“People joke about having the starting quarterback as your roommate,” Zakelj told NBC Sports Bay Area.
“I think it’s funny from the outside.
“He’s still a very humble guy.
“He still has that work ethic that’s contributed to his success on the field.”
Purdy is in the second year of his $3.7million rookie deal.
And even if Purdy leads the 49ers to Super Bowl victory against the Chiefs, he is not eligible for a pay rise next season due to the NFL’s roster rules.
According to the CBA, a “Rookie Contract for a Drafted Rookie may not be renegotiated, amended or altered in any way until after the final regular season game of the player’s third contract year.”
But Purdy has managed to capitalize on his new-found fame by signing a nationwide endorsement deal with Toyota.
He will appear in national content across digital and linear platforms and at experiences designed to engage fans and Toyota dealers.
Purdy will have to find new living arrangements soon, however.
He is getting married to college sweetheart Jenna Brandt in the offseason.
Meanwhile, Purdy’s parents Shawn and Carrie Purdy have a similar lifestyle as small-business owners.
They have run Fantastic Spa Outlet in Mesa, Arizona, for over 20 years.
The store is open Fridays-Sundays from 10am-5pm.
Due to Brock’s football commitments – initially with Iowa State and the 49ers – Shawn and Carrie either leave the hot tub store in the hands of someone else or even close it to ensure they see their son in action.
As revealed by Melissa Reedy on NBC, Shawn leaves a sign on the door saying: “Sorry, went home to watch football game” with his cell number.
“I had a guy lined up who was supposed to come in and work Saturday —– but he didn’t show up,” Shawn told the Des Moines Register in 2018 when Brock played at Iowa State.
“I told one of the neighbors to keep an eye on the place.
“I didn’t really care what happened, because I wasn’t going to miss the game if there was any way Brock was going to play.”
Shawn got into the hot tub business after playing professional baseball in the minor leagues from 1990 until 1998 as a pitcher.
